Coinciding with an exhibition of the same title at Ampersand, The Secret Inside features a selection of new ink drawings & assemblages by Portland artist Matt Hall. His work is a richly detailed & fragile investigation into what exists beyond the lives of animals that regularly pass away upon the surface of city streets. His drawings subtly convey the shape of repose that only death can bring to animals that are otherwise lively & adroit. Comprised of the delicate parts of found animal corpses that Hall has preserved & assembled, his sculptural pieces might bring to mind the situations of natural history dioramas or the collected artifacts of curiosity cabinets. Yet they look beyond the mere science of a corpse & instead investigate the implied narrative of a life that has ended, asking whether we are tethered to the point at which we die or if there is indeed a shape to what exists beyond death.
